RetainerThe braces are off. Your teeth are straight, your smile is awesome and you’re in the home stretch! Next step? Your orthodontist fits you with a final retainer – one that will help keep your teeth in proper place and position.

The three mistakes that orthodontists see kids make the most with their final retainers?

  1. They don’t wear it: Retainers are clunky and kind of annoying to wear all day. You may be tempted to just forget about the whole thing. However, if you don’t wear your retainer, your teeth will begin to shift back. You might even need to go back into braces.
  2. They don't clean it: Remember to brush your final retainer each day (when you brush your teeth).  Put it in a cleaning solution at night (baking soda and water will work just fine). If you don’t, bacteria will start to take hold…and smell.
  3. They lose it: You probably know an adult who constantly loses their keys. Don’t be the teen who always misplaces their retainer. When you take it out, put it in its case…and put the case in the same place.

Turn wearing your final retainer into a regular habit, and your new straight teeth will thank you!
